Born and raised in Toronto, David obtained a B.A. (Hons.) in modern history from Victoria University in the University of Toronto, and his law degree from Queen's University in Kingston. David was called to the Ontario Bar in 1976 and has more than thirty years of experience advising business clients in a wide variety of matters including buying and selling businesses, mergers and acquisitions, secured lending, provincial debt financing, shareholders' agreements, partnership agreements, corporate reorganizations, employee share ownership plans, family business planning, franchise agreements, distributorship agreements, and employment law.

David has been involved with many organizations as a volunteer over the years including Eglinton St. George's United Church (where he served as Chairman of the Steering Committee and the congregation), the North Toronto Hockey Association, various committees at YMCA Geneva Park (the national leadership training and conference centre of the Canadian YMCA), and Thornhill Country Club (where he served as a director and as President). He has also been actively involved for more than ten years on the Board of Regents of Victoria University in the University of Toronto, where he served for three years as Chairman of the Board. In this capacity, he initiated and led a wholesale review and revision of the Board's governance practices.

David also serves as a director of many private companies.

David has been married for more than thirty years, and he and his wife Ellen have three grown sons.
